The easiest method to import Maildir files into Thunderbird is by using ImportExportTools NG, a free Thunderbird add-on. First, install ImportExportTools NG from Thunderbird’s Add-ons Manager. Then, right-click the folder where you want your emails imported and select ImportExportTools NG → Import Messages. In the file explorer window, change the filter to “All Files,” open the cur folder inside your Maildir directory, select the emails you want, and click Open. The chosen messages will appear in Thunderbird immediately.

While this method works well for small batches, it can be slow and risky for large Maildir structures. For bulk imports, use an automated tool Aryson Maildir Converter, which preserves attachments, folder hierarchy, and metadata, ensuring a smooth, accurate migration. It also supports Maildir++ and exports directly to Thunderbird-compatible MBOX format.
