Choosing Between Automatic Watering Systems and Manual Lawn Care in Our Local Climate - joy40 - 10-29-2025

So, I’ve been struggling to keep my lawn looking healthy through the dry spells we get in the summer around Duncan. I usually water by hand with a hose in the evenings, but honestly, it’s starting to feel like a full-time job. A couple of neighbors installed automatic sprinklers last year, and their lawns stayed green even during that stretch of heat in July. I’m torn between investing in a system like that or just sticking to manual care. Does the automatic setup really make that big of a difference here?

I made the switch last spring and it’s been a game-changer for me. The auto system saves a ton of time, and I like that I can adjust it depending on the rainfall — which is perfect for our unpredictable weather. I had a local team from Landscapers in Duncan, BC install it, and they set everything up to match my lawn’s slope and soil type. Now I barely think about watering, and the grass still looks fresh even when it’s been dry for weeks.

I’ve noticed people get creative with their lawns lately — some mix small rock areas or native plants with grass so it’s easier to maintain. A friend of mine added some ornamental grasses and a few stepping stones, and now it looks great without needing constant attention. It’s kind of inspiring how little changes like that can make a yard both practical and nice to look at.
