How Ranitidine Works to Reduce Stomach Acid?
#1
Ranitidine 150mg works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach, helping to relieve conditions like heartburn, acid reflux, gastritis, and peptic ulcers. It belongs to a class of drugs called H2 (histamine-2) receptor blockers. Normally, histamine in the stomach binds to H2 receptors on acid-producing cells, stimulating them to release gastric acid. Ranitidine blocks these receptors, preventing histamine from triggering acid secretion. As a result, stomach acid levels decrease, allowing the esophagus and stomach lining to heal and reducing symptoms of pain or burning. The medication usually starts working within 1 to 2 hours after ingestion and can provide relief for up to 12 hours. Although Ranitidine was widely used, it has been withdrawn in many countries due to concerns over impurities (NDMA). Patients are advised to consult their doctor for safer alternatives, such as famotidine or other approved acid-reducing medications.
