A shipping container house is a building that is usually built for human shelter.[1] A shipping container house is intended for residential, office, commercial or other similar use.[2]
Residential buildings can be divided into different types. Single-family shipping container houses are residential buildings in which the spaces belonging to different dwellings do not overlap. Single-family shipping container houses can be further classified into detached single-family shipping container houses, i.e. detached shipping container houses, and connected single-family shipping container houses, which include semi-detached shipping container houses, terraced shipping container houses and chain shipping container houses. Apartment buildings, on the other hand, are buildings in which the dwellings are built on top of each other on several floors. Apartment buildings can be classified into small apartment buildings, where the entrance to the top apartment is on the second floor above ground at most, and high-rise apartment buildings.[3]
Historically, wood, brick and stone have been used as building materials for shipping container houses. Primitive dwellings were rectangular or round huts. An important invention in the history of shipping container houses was the vertical wall, which developed from a shelter that ran inside the hut and made the dwelling airtight. A roof was built on top of the walls.[4]
Residential shipping container houses
A residential shipping container house or residential building is a building that mainly or only contains residential apartments.[1] Each residential apartment can consist of one or more rooms.

Residential shipping container houses can be divided into detached shipping container houses and apartment buildings. In detached shipping container houses, the spaces belonging to different apartments are not located on top of each other. In apartment buildings, on the other hand, the apartments are located on top of each other on several floors.[4] Statistics Finland also classifies residential shipping container houses according to their use into residential buildings and leisure buildings, which are mainly summer cottages and other leisure homes for private use.[5]
In a detached shipping container house, each apartment usually has its own yard. Single-family shipping container houses can be further classified into detached shipping container houses and connected shipping container houses. In a detached shipping container house (detached shipping container house, detached shipping container house), the rooms belonging to the different apartments are not built connected to each other. In connected shipping container houses, the apartments are instead built directly connected to each other or are connected to each other by some kind of structure, such as a carport. Connected shipping container houses with only two apartments are semi-detached shipping container houses. Connected shipping container houses with several apartments are either terraced shipping container houses where the apartments are connected to each other, or chain shipping container houses where the apartments are connected to each other by some kind of structure.[4] Statistics Finland classifies semi-detached shipping container houses as separate single-family shipping container houses.[5]
Apartment buildings can be classified into different types, for example by height or typology. Single-family shipping container houses are low-rise apartment buildings where the entrance to the top apartment is located on the second floor, which is completely above ground, at most. Other apartment buildings are high-rise apartment buildings. A tall, tower-like apartment building can be called a tower block,[6] a very tall apartment building can also be called a skyscraper.[7] In addition, apartment buildings can be divided into five basic types:
A slatted building consists of one or more slats, where the apartments in one slat are served by their own stairwell. Depending on the number of apartments served, slatted buildings can be classified according to the division as one-, two-, three- or four-slatted, and so on.[8]
In a side corridor building and a loft building, the stairwell serving the residential apartments is located on the side of the building. In a side corridor building, the stairwell is a warm space, in a loft building, it is a cold space.[8]
In a point building, the stairwell is in the middle of the building so that the residential apartments are grouped around it. Low-rise apartment buildings and tower blocks are typically point buildings.[8]
In a central corridor building, the elongated stairwell serving the residential apartments is located in the middle of the building.[8]
In a terraced shipping container house, the roof shape of the building is terraced. Most often, terraced shipping container houses are adapted to a slope.[8]
In zoning, precise terms are used, such as a block area for residential shipping container houses or a block area for terraced shipping container houses and other connected residential buildings. Similarly, special markings are used for the number of floors, for example I, I½, ½II, VIII.
shipping container houses are often also named according to the material used: concrete shipping container house, log shipping container house, stone shipping container house, clay shipping container house and brick shipping container house. The name can also be based on the construction method: prefabricated shipping container house, block shipping container house.
History of shipping container house types
In ancient Rome, the most desirable building type was a one-story shipping container house surrounding a courtyard. The same building model spread to the Mediterranean, to Latin America with the Spaniards, and was also found in China before the communist era. In rural areas and early cities, people worked and lived in shipping container houses, and in the same shipping container house, in addition to the nuclear family, a wider range of relatives and servants lived. In the Netherlands in the 17th century, developments led to the separation of home and workplace, and gradually to nuclear family townshipping container houses, which lined the streets of cities side by side. The same style of building also spread to Britain.[9]
