What Happens to IMAP Mailbox Exports When Network Connections Drop Midway?
#1
Large IMAP mailbox exports can become challenging when the connection between the client application and the mail server is unstable. This is particularly noticeable when processing accounts containing thousands of messages, large attachments, or multiple nested folders.

A temporary network interruption may stop an ongoing export before all mailbox data has been retrieved. In some environments, administrators may need to reconnect and repeat certain operations, making it difficult to determine which messages have already been processed.

Before starting a large mailbox transfer, I think it is important to examine server response times, connection stability, IMAP session limits, and mailbox size. Running multiple account exports simultaneously can also increase server load and trigger connection throttling, depending on the provider's policies.

For this reason, an imap backup tool should be evaluated not only on its export speed but also on its ability to handle multiple accounts, organize folder-level processing, and identify duplicate messages. Administrators should additionally review application logs and verify exported data after interrupted sessions.
The SysInfo IMAP Backup Tool provides batch account processing through CSV, folder mapping, duplicate removal, and multiple output options, including PST, MBOX, EML, MSG, and PDF. These features can help organize mailbox export operations across different user accounts.

Another important consideration is maintaining a separate copy of important mailbox records. A planned imap email backup process can help reduce dependence on a single live mail server when investigating synchronization failures or preparing for infrastructure changes.
For network and email administrators here, what approach works best for large IMAP exports? Do you limit concurrent sessions, process accounts individually, or use scheduled export windows to minimize server load.
